Nicoya demonstrates their innovative sensor technology to Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Waterloo, ON, January 18, 2016: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with executives of Nicoya Lifesciences on January 14th during his visit to Waterloo, ON. Ryan Denomme, Nicoya’s CEO, demonstrated the company’s innovative nanosensor technology, the core of their OpenSPR product that is revolutionizing the biotechnology industry.
Nicoya’s OpenSPR provides analysis of proteins and other molecules for 1/10th the cost of existing surface plasmon resonance solutions. This technology is quickly being adopted by the life sciences research industry to help reduce the time and cost involved with understanding diseases and developing effective therapies for such diseases. Nicoya started in 2012 out of the University of Waterloo and since its inception has had strong regional support from the University of Waterloo, Communitech, Velocity and the Accelerator Centre, as well as being awarded a number of grants through the Federal and Provincial government.
Nicoya’s CEO Ryan Denomme said: “It was an honor to have the Prime Minister meet some of our team and see our ground-breaking technology. It is a testament to the strength of this region and to the Government’s commitment to the development of innovative technology companies in Canada.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said: “Canadians have long been international leaders in the fields of innovation and technology. Our government realizes the importance of investing in new, ground-breaking companies – like Nicoya – because when we do, we’re not only investing in our economy, we’re investing in our future.”
“Nicoya Lifesciences are a leading example of the talent and ideas to emerge from the University of Waterloo’s uniquely entrepreneurial ecosystem,” said Feridun Hamdullahpur, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo. “Ryan Denomme and his team have taken full advantage of the world-class education and deep support for entrepreneurs at Waterloo to build a truly innovative company at the forefront of an emerging industry.”
Nicoya is in San Diego this week for Peptalk, an international conference for protein science, and will make a major new product announcement. More information on Nicoya can be found at www.nicoyalife.com.
